Emirates (EK, Dubai International) has completed its evaluation of a potential Madrid Barajas to México City International route Mexico's Reportur newspaper reports. The route is the latest in a series of fifth freedom services the Emirati carrier has investigated alongside Copenhagen Kastrup to Seattle Tacoma International, Paris CDG to Los Angeles International, Madrid Barajas to Buenos Aires Ministro Pistarini and Lisbon to Rio de Janeiro International. Thus far, only Milan Malpensa to New York JFK has become a reality. In June 2012, Thierry Antinori, chief commercial officer at Emirates, said both Mexico and Colombia (Bogotá) were on Emirates' radar but noted that Mexico City's altitude would impose hefty weight restrictions on any operating aircraft. At present, Mexico City - Madrid is served by Iberia (IB, Madrid Barajas) and Aeroméxico (AM, México City International).
