Ryanair (FR, Dublin International) CEO Michael O'Leary says that his airline might "evaluate" a proposal to join an Alitalia (AZA, Rome Fiumicino) cash call, should it be asked. Speaking in Rome, Mr O'Leary said that Alitalia could be restructured, "but the airline was suffering from too much political meddling, too many strikes and an inadequate fleet." A proposal to feed domestic and regional traffic into Alitalia's international Rome Fiumicino hub were rebuffed by the Italians who doggedly maintained they would go stick to their own business plan. Alitalia has so far been able to raise only EUR173million (USD235million) out a required EUR300million (USD407million) during its latest capital-raising drive, limited to shareholders only. The Irish Independent says the situation at the airline has become so dire that it has been left with the prospect of running out of fuel before next summer.
