Aegean Airlines (A3, Athens) has received clearance from the European Commission to acquire competitor Olympic Air (OA, Athens) from its current owner Marfin Investment Group. The commission has said that its investigation would have shown that Olympic would have been forced to stop operations in the near future due to financial difficulties if Aegean would not acquire the carrier. Therefore it does not see any harm to competition as Olympic would have otherwise disappeared as well leaving Aegean with no major competitor in Greece following the departure of Cyprus Airways (1947) (Larnaca) from the domestic market in Greece. Olympic Air currently operates a single A319-100, eight Dash 8-400s and four Dash 8-100s on a predominantly domestic network with some international services to Belgrade, Bucharest Henri Coanda, Istanbul Atatürk, Sofia and Tirana. It will be fully integrated into larger Aegean Airlines.
